Head of Engineering
Who we are
We're Instaclause, a 20-person Belgian legal tech company helping 900+ accountants generate contracts, reports, leases, and incorporation deeds without needing a law degree. We're based in Ghent and Brazil, growing fast across Benelux and Europe.
Our product turns complex legal logic into ready-to-sign documents in minutes. It works, customers love it, and now we're scaling the team and the platform to match the ambition. That's where you come in.
What this role actually looks like
You'll be the first Head of Engineering at Instaclause — not inheriting a finished org, but leading a tight team of 6 (including QA) while staying hands-on yourself. This is a player-coach role: you'll own the engineering team end-to-end — hiring, architecture, delivery, culture — and you'll also write code. We're small enough that we need everyone contributing, including you.
You'll work directly with the CPO and the rest of leadership to make sure we ship the right things, the right way, at the right pace. Day to day, you'll be:
- Leading a team of 6 across frontend (Angular/TypeScript), backend (.NET/C#), QA, and AI — and growing it as we scale
- Writing code yourself — architecture decisions, feature work, code reviews. You're not just steering, you're building
- Owning the technical roadmap alongside the CPO, balancing speed with quality
- Setting and maintaining engineering standards: architecture, CI/CD, testing, code review culture
- Removing blockers so the team can ship — and knowing when to escalate versus just fixing it yourself
- Translating product goals into realistic delivery plans, and pushing back when something doesn't add up
- Hiring the next wave of engineers: defining roles, running interviews, making calls
- Keeping the platform healthy as we grow into new markets (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and beyond)
- Being a genuine partner to the CPO — someone who flags tradeoffs early and thinks commercially as well as technically
Who you are
We're not looking for a perfect checklist match. If you recognize yourself in most of these, let's talk:
- You've led an engineering team before — not just technically, but the people side too: hiring, feedback, growth conversations
- You're still writing code regularly and want to keep it that way. This is not a pure management role
- You've built and shipped production software at scale, ideally in a SaaS or B2B context
- You're comfortable in our stack or adjacent to it: .NET/C#, Angular/TypeScript, Google Cloud, PostgreSQL
- You understand modern AI tooling — not necessarily at a research level, but enough to work effectively with an AI engineer and make good architectural calls
- You care about delivery. You'd rather ship something good and learn than spend three months polishing something perfect
- You can hold two things at once: technical depth and product thinking
- You're a clear communicator — with engineers, with leadership, with the occasional customer
- You speak fluent English. Dutch is a strong plus; we're a Belgian company and it matters
**Bonus points for: **
- Experience in legal tech, document generation, or other regulated industries
- Experience in a player-coach role — leading a small team while staying hands-on technically
- Familiarity with Belgian or EU legal/compliance frameworks
- Having worked in a company this size — where everyone knows everyone and there's no place to hide (in the best possible way)
What it's like to work here
We're 20 people. No layers, no politics, no "let me check with my manager's manager." You'll know everyone by name within a week.
We take the work seriously, but not ourselves. We celebrate wins (usually with food), help each other when things get stuck, and genuinely enjoy the team. If you've ever been at a company where people actually look forward to the team call — that's what we're going for.
- Real leadership scope — you're not inheriting a finished org, you're shaping it
- Real impact — 900+ customers use what your team ships, every day
- Hybrid flexibility — office in Ghent + remote. We care about output, not hours in a chair
- Competitive salary — depending on experience
- Learning budget — conferences, courses, tools. Stay sharp, stay curious
- A team that has your back — we're in this together
Our stack
- Google Cloud-based SaaS platform
- Backend: .NET 8 / C# — clean architecture, PostgreSQL, Firebase auth
- Frontend: Angular 19 (Nx monorepo, signals, standalone components)
- AI layer: in active development — Python, LangChain, RAG pipelines, LLMs
- You'll influence tooling and architecture from day one
